For my presentation four, I focused on women’s rights and how the United Nations Population Fund plays in role in helping. The United Nations Population Fund is also known as UNFPA, and began in 1969. This fund has helped to decrease the rate of women dying from pregnancy and childbirth in half. The mission of UNFPA is to help and promote a world where “every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.” It is important for them to focus on women and young people in order to create a healthy and productive life for every individual.
Women today are still struggling, especially in the developing countries. Sexual and reproductive health is the leading cause of disability and the death of women. Over a hundred million girls face the prospect of child marriage and other harmful practices like female genital mutilation. Women should have the right to freely decide when they would like a family and how many children they will have. There are many women today who still do not have the rights and the services and supplies necessary to do so.
The United Nations Population Fund works in more than one hundred and fifty countries. They ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. Their main focus is on women and young people in order to reassure their right to sexual and reproductive health. The way they are able to help is by using mobilizing resources, by advocating directly with government officials or in public forums. UNFPA can help women by instructing them on how to plan their pregnancies and space their births in an effective way. Having a certified person to deliver the baby and have the essential supplies ready for the arrival of the baby is very important.
The United Nations Population Fund made a goal to help all women in remote areas who are struggling with any type of disaster. They also try to help to give the rights to young women in services that are related to reproductive health and sexuality. UNFPA will provide information in order to protect them and make the right decisions. It is important for this fund to also focus on adolescent girls in order to help them from the beginning to stop poverty and to help improve their future.
This fund focuses on a wide variety of health topics. In the sexual and reproductive health area, their main focus is on family planning, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, and midwifery. They also pay attention to human rights and gender equality, which can include female genital mutation, and gender based violence. It is important for this fund to talk to the young people about adolescent pregnancy, child marriage, and comprehensive sexuality education.
UNFPA works with the governments, UN agencies, community-based organizations, and other partners to ensure the necessary help needed. They also deploy hygiene supplies, family planning supplies, and other support to help the women in need. I believe this fund can make a huge difference in our world.
